Yesterday i went to KFC outlet with some of my friends. When we reached there it was already 7.30PM.It is neither an evening snack time nor the dinner time here in India. So we thought of killing one more hour in the Mall then to come back again to make a hole in one of our friends pocket as it was going to be his birthday treat. But one of my friend insisted that he has to go home early as some of his “distant relatives” were coming(This was his excuse but i’m sure he had some other plans with his girlfriend). So we went inside KFC and looked everywhere to grab an empty table.within 10 min the Large chicken Bucket,KFC original Recipe, burgers and ofcourse countless small sachet of Sauces were there on our table. And with the word GO,we all started hogging like Pigs…………
You are thinking that i am making you read this boring account of my “how i spend my last evening”??No…..What i saw in KFC made me think that though we have spent money on these food items and aquired rights to eat them, still we don’t have right to waste them when more than one third of world’s population is poor and they don’t have enough resources to even manage 2 meals in a day.

On evry single table i saw food being wasted. Some times by Children and some times by Adults too as “parts of food not eaten”.Sometimes Chlidren asked their parents to get specific items but later refuse to have them. And that too goes as waste. The following pic shows what percentage of shoppers waste food for one or many reasons. It can be sometime prompted and sometimes unprompted.
Look at all the reasons.Ok,one cannot eat which has past the best before date for health reasons, but looking once at the other reasons, don’t you think that we can controll food wastage by significant amount wothout much effort?Look at the percentage of shoppers who threw food as left overs ,coz over cooked and part of food not eaten.Other than these reasons when you see reasons like family didn’t like or children refused etc, that contribute very small percent individually in this tally, then the percentage looks insignificant but as you count them together you will see how many of us waste food for simply NO REASON.
By simple presence of mind one can stop wasting food.
2)cook it with care
3)serve just enough
4)use what is left
5)teach children the importance of food
Now why i am stressing on this issue can be understand with the following data.According to a study, published on BBC website,
“….People are needlessly throwing away 3.6m tonnes of food each year in England and Wales, research suggests.
The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) found that salad, fruit and bread were most commonly wasted and 60% of all dumped food was untouched…..WRAP estimated that householders across the UK throw away £10.2bn of avoidable food waste every year……average UK household needlessly throws away 18% of all food purchased.
Families with children throw away 27%……….”.
Now this study was done in 2007-2008.And the wastage is increasing every year.If u want to read the whole report then here it is…..(i got it from BBC site.)

And this time i am not going to conclude this blog by writing but everything will be summed up in this pic.
